Here is the Finished Virtual Choir Project!
Thank you so much to all of the students, alumni, and staff for the beautiful recordings you submitted to make our Graduation 2020 Virtual Choir Project possible! Please enjoy the final product, as well as a video of the recording being played over the loudspeakers at the Rodeo Grounds during the graduation ceremony, below.

What is the Project? The St. Paul High School Choir is inviting anyone who would like to join us to create a virtual choir recording of Long Time Traveller to celebrate the graduating class of 2020. Normally, the choir seniors, along with the rest of the choir, would sing this piece at the graduation ceremony. Because we don't know if we'll be able to sing at an in-person ceremony this year, doing a virtual choir recording will allow us to be able to make our senior send-off piece a part of the 2020 graduation celebration no matter what it ends up looking like. And even better, it will allow alumni and others to be a part of it!
How Do I Participate? If you would like to be a part of our virtual choir recording, please send in a recording of yourself singing one (or more!) of the parts and send them to Ms. Frey ([email protected]) by no later than May 17th.
How Do I Make My Recording(s)?Please follow these steps to make and submit your recording(s) by no later than May 17th:
1. If you are not already familiar with the song or The Wailin' Jennys arrangement of Long Time Traveller, please listen to the video on the righthand side of this page. 2. Use the voice part recordings on the righthand side of this page to decide which voice part you would like to record. Part 1 is the melody and is the highest part. Part 2 and Part 3 are both harmonies. Part 3 is the lowest part, and Part 2 is somewhere in the middle. Feel free to listen to all three and sing along to get a sense of which will be easiest for you to learn and which is most comfortable for you to sing. Most men will want to sing an octave down from the recording. The starting notes for both octaves are given at the beginning of each voice part recording. 3. Use the lyrics on the righthand side of this page to practice along with the voice part recording you have chosen until you feel like you have your part down. 4. Open an audio recording program on your phone or computer. I highly recommend Voice Record Pro. It's a free audio recording app available for iPhone and Android. The Voice Memos app in Utilities on iPhone is another easy way to record an audio file. If you can't figure out how to do an audio recording, a video recording will work as well, but some file formats aren't compatible or easy to convert, and video files are very large and therefore might be hard to get to Ms. Frey. 5. Record your part! Please use headphones and make sure that you're somewhere quiet so that the only thing that ends up on your recording is your voice. Put one headphone in your ear so that you can hear the voice part recording. You will need to match the recording in key, tempo, cut-offs, musicality, etc. as you record so that all the recording submissions can be edited together into a virtual choir. Have the other headphone out of your ear so that you can hear yourself singing. If you mess up, just start a new recording and try again! 6. Once you're happy with your recording, save it and send it to Ms. Frey! You can email the file to [email protected] or share it through Google Drive--whatever is easiest for you. 7. If you want to help us make the final product sound like a bigger, fuller choir, please record a second or third voice part! Just repeat the steps above with one or both of the other voice parts and send them in as well! 8. If you also want to take a picture of yourself recording and send it in, please do! We'd love to include these in the final product! 9. After May 17th, Ms. Frey will edit all of the recordings together using iMovie. Once the final product is complete, we will make it available for everyone to enjoy! Thank you so much for considering being a part of this project! We hope that it can serve as a special memento for the class of 2020. |
Use These Resources to Make Your Recording:Long Time Traveller by the Wailin' JennysThis is what our final product will sound like with all three harmonies. Since this recording only has one singer on each part, our completed recording will sound much fuller than this one, just like it would with a full choir.
Voice Part RecordingsUse these recordings to learn your individual part. Once you are ready to record, you will listen to and sing along with the part you have chosen while using headphones so that everyone is matching the exact same key, tempo, cut-offs, etc.
If you prefer to sing higher, choose Part 1. This is the melody. If you prefer to sing lower, choose Part 3. This is one of the harmonies. If you prefer to sing somewhere in between, choose Part 2. This is another of the harmonies. If you want to record yourself singing more than one part, please do! The more voices we have, the fuller it will sound! Just record each one separately and send them all in!
LyricsHere are the full lyrics to use for your recording. Please note that while the original version contains the text "...to lay this body down," we have changed that to "...to see the world beyond" in order to make it more appropriate for a graduation celebration.
Ye fleeting charms of earth,
Farewell, your springs of joy are dry. My soul now seeks another home, A brighter world on high. I'm a longtime travellin' here below, I'm a longtime travellin' away from home. I'm a longtime travellin' here below, To see the world beyond. Farewell, kind friends whose tender care Has long engaged my love. Your fond embrace I now exchange For better friends above. I'm a longtime travellin' here below, I'm a longtime travellin' away from home. I'm a longtime travellin' here below, To see the world beyond. I'm a longtime travellin' here below, I'm a longtime travellin' away from home. I'm a longtime travellin' here below, To see the world beyond. To see the world beyond. |
